Phoenix Huddle Impacting Kids
By: Huddle Leader Debbie Foster
Thirty kids and a dozen parents spent the last six Friday afternoons training for a triathlon! For many of them, it was their first triathlon. FCA Endurance held an after school triathlon class through the Kyrene School District in Tempe, AZ (class photo: left). Families were able to participate in the classes together, and also trained outside of class time. Coaches led run and bike workouts, taught about nutrition, bike safety, transitions and character development. During the six weeks, kids and parents were given the challenge to MAKE A DIFFERENCE on MONDAY (like Air 1 radio does). One child gave his paid race entry to another child. With the help of shaving cream, the kids learned that their words can not be taken back, they can only apologize for hurtful things said. (we sprayed shaving cream all over the ground and played in it; then asked them to put it back in the can!) The class culminated with a race Sunday, March 8th. Kids ran one mile, then biked four miles and swam 100 yards. Adults ran two miles, biked twelve miles and swam 400 yards. Most of those who took the class placed top five in their age group! Special thanks to our FCA Endurance coaches, Lorri Chavez, Jason Ford, Heather Landers, John Foster & Debbie Foster. We teamed up with a local swim club (our daughter's team) to offer two swim practices at no extra cost to our huddle or the families. Teammate, and top local triathlete, Dan Cadriel, came by to talk with the kids after their race!
